Nook Color : From E-Reader to Gingerbread Tablet!

Ok by no means I did this at all, I'm just putting this line by line instructions for the benefit of thos e interested in hacking their Nooks and there are many of such ones available online. This is a tabulation of what worked for me (after 2 Nooks). I think its quite intimidating in the beginning (prospect of 'bricking' the nook!) but I thinks is 95% safe! good enough for me!

So Kudos and Many many thanks to those people who did those links I'm about to list below in my brief steps. You guys are android gods as far as I'm concerned.

START

Ok, the NC is basically an E-Reader...but its built on top of Android 2.1 (that is until 2.2 version comes out) which is probably good enough for a lot of things but does support a lot of the new stuff available to newer versions Android such as faster speeds and flash support.

Before we can do anything with the NC, we need to ROOT it. Meaning get to its roots and gain control of the device...that's right get below the B&N E-Reader bull on top and run things from there.

To do so, since I've the 1.1 FW version of the NC, I loaded up Autonooter 3.0.0.

==> See instructions for Autonooter here : http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting

After this procedure, your device will the ROOTed. You will have Android market application and here's where the fun starts.

==> With android market, load up ROM MANAGER application and install

This manager is the biz! It allows you to load new ROMS directly or use its CWM (ClockWorkMod) Recover mode to do just about any kind of hacking.

==> run ROM MANAGER and FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY

PS : at this point anytime a prompt asking for permission for Superuser authorization, say YES!

Now you will have CWM in the device and you can boot directly into it from OFF mode by pressing the 'n' and power buttons together (holding it).

Now, for the juicy stuff....loading up Gingerbread....there are many derivatives of this. Cyanogenmod 7 is the ever-changing one....I opted for Phiremod which does not change as much and uses CM7 as its base.

==> go ahead and visit here and load the latest Phiremod ROM! https://sites.google.com/site/phiremod/nook-color-roms

ok, btw, you should have an SD card in your nook ok! 2GB at least.

now, copy the latest Phiremod (at the time of writing was version 6) zip file into the SD card on your nook. Make sure the card is in the nook if its not in already.

Boot up in recover mode, this will bring you to CWM recovery mode. Use the volume buttons to navigate and the 'n' button to select (power to go back). Choose 'install from SD card'.....navigatet to the folder or the Phiremod zip file...and install it! You'll see a bunch of text coming up reporting the installation status. Once its complete....REBOOT!

Voila....if everything goes well (it did for me!), you will be in Android Gingerbread heaven. To enable bluetooth, make sure you go to ROM MANAGER and FIX PERMISSIONS then reboot.

Now, you can follow any of those nook colour forums or Phiremod forums for any releases. Don't hesitate to report your user experience to these guys (and please in a good, nice way as they are really doing this for nothing and out of pure passion!)....they will improve it.

Power of the People!
